Records of loss of life and damage caused by floods worldwide show that these have continued to rise steadily during recent years. The situation is likely to be even more severe considering the uncertainties of the future development shaped by the main drivers such as climate change (IPCC, 2007) or rapid urbanisation (UN, 2005).

In order to answer these future challenges, an emergent task in flood risk management is development of  flood resilient cities.  In order to achieve that a wide range of actions and contribution of a wide range of players is necessary.  A holistic way of thinking is required!

You, as a citizen, become one of the key players in flood risk management. It is about your right to be informed about relevant flood issues, but it is also a responsibility as you have to built the capacity to take your role in an efficient manner.
