Wetproofing



What is it about?


If you decide to apply wetproofing measures, you agree to allow flood water entering the building, but you are likely not to suffer damage as the building is adapted to flooding by applying water resistant building material or adapting the occupancy of the building (e.g. basement is not used for living). Additionally, you can raise the inventory above the expected flood water level e.g. by placing it on a sufficiently high platform.

flood damage potential of a building is reduced by applying water resistant materials. Due to economic or technical reasons, the lower parts of the building (basement) is partly flooded and not used for living. At the same time, the ground floor can be dry-proofed. e.g. water resistant paints and coating, lime based plaster, plasters of synthetic resin, mineral fibre insulation tiles, oil based paints

The floodwater does not reach the building itself. Barriers are installed at some distance from the building or a group of properties

Constrains


Wet proofing measures is used when the other techniques are not technically feasible or cost intensive. The least expensive measure, the major costs are for rearrangement of utility items, installation of flood resistant materials, manpower and equipment to relocate items and organization of cleanup when floodwaters recede.
